FAQs

How do I determine my Pupillary Distance (PD)

The most precise way to obtain your PD is from your eye doctor. If your PD is not included with your prescription, we strongly recommend that you call your doctor and request your PD.  To have this professionally measured there may be a fee associated since this is done in the optical and is not part of the exam process normally.

If your eye doctor cannot provide your PD and you can’t have it measured professionally, it is possible to measure it yourself or with the help of a friend.

What you will need:

  • Millimeter Ruler
  • Mirror or Friend

Helpful hints:

  • Make sure to measure your PD multiple times to ensure that it is accurate and consistent.
  • For adults the PD ranges from 54mm - 74mm
  • For children their PD ranges from 43mm - 53mm

Steps to Measuring your PD on your Own:

        1. Stand 8 inches away from the mirror.  Wearing contact lenses will help you see what you need to see if you have them and will not affect the measurements.
        2. While facing the mirror, with your face straight, hold the ruler against your brow.
        3. Start by closing your right eye, and align the the ruler's zero to the center of your left pupil.
        4. While  keeping your face straight, close your left eye and open your right eye.
        5. Read the mm line that lines up with the center of your right pupil. That number is your Pupillary Distance.

Measuring your PD with a friend:

If your bestie or favorite family member is helping you measure your PD, simply stand in front of them with both eyes open, and have them put the zero of the millimeter ruler over the center of one pupil and have them measure the distance to the center of the other pupil.

Things to remember when having your friend measure your PD:

  • Have them sit or crouch down while they measure your PD, so that they are out of your field of vision, and you are looking straight ahead.
  • Try to keep your eyes as still as possible.
  • When looking straight ahead, focus on an object that is 20 ft away past their head.
  • Do not to look at the person measuring your PD!
  • Have them line up the 0 mark on 1 of the pupils centers and then take the measurement on the other pupils center.

WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT / HEV LIGHT?

Blue light / HEV are short-wavelength, high-energy light rays on the blue end of the visible light spectrum. While it occurs naturally, there are many more man-made sources lately, such as computer screens, smartphones and other digital devices that emit significant amounts. Human eyes are not very good at blocking blue light and long-term exposure can lead harm vision by damaging the eye’s retina. In the short term, you may also notice that your eyes can feel tired and blurry after looking at digital screens - which is a result of blue light exposure.

WHAT ARE UV RAYS?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a type of energy produced by the sun that, unlike the sun’s light or heat, cannot be seen or felt. But exposure to UV radiation can have harmful effects including sunburned eyes and long-term eye damage. Sunlight is made up of two types of harmful rays: long wave ultraviolet A (UVA) and short wave ultraviolet B (UVB). All of our sunglasses provide 100% UV protection.

DOES LENS COLOR INFORM THE LEVEL OF PROTECTION?

Lens color is a personal choice and doesn't affect how well sunglass lenses protect your eyes from UV light. All of our sunglasses provide 100% UV protection against harmful ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Colored lenses are also used in mood enhancing color-therapy, otherwise known as chromotherapy.

WHAT ARE MIRROR-COATED LENSES?

Mirror-coated lenses limit the amount of light entering your eyes, so you're more comfortable.

Mirror coatings (also called flash coatings) are highly reflective coatings applied to the front surface of sunglass lenses to reduce the amount of light entering the eye. This makes them especially beneficial for activities in very bright conditions, such as snow skiing on a sunny day. We provide two different mirror-coated lens options: full mirror lenses are bold and prominent while flash mirror lenses are lighter and more subtle.

WHAT ARE POLARIZED LENSES?

Polarized lenses provide advance comfort as well as 100% UV protection in conditions that cause sun glare. Polarized technology only allows vertical light rays to pass through the lens while blocking horizontal waves that bounce off surfaces such as water, glass and other reflective materials. As a result, images seen through polarized lenses appear a little darker than usual, but objects and details look incredibly crisp and clear.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROGRESSIVE AND BIFOCAL LENSES?

Progressive lenses are multifocal lenses. Instead of offering just two different viewing zones (i.e., near and far vision), progressive lenses offer a channel of focal points by seamlessly transitioning from distance vision to intermediate and near vision and everything in between. Progressive lenses provide much more natural vision and are typically recommended over bifocal lenses.

Bifocal lenses offer two different viewing zones: the top part of the lens is for distance (i.e., to help you see things far away) and the lower part of the lens is for reading (i.e., to help you see things up close). The viewing zones of bifocal lenses are divided by a visible line.

WHAT ARE BLUELIGHT (OR HEV LIGHT) LENSES?

Bluelight lenses use a precision-engineered lens coating that can deflect a significant portion of harmful blue/violet light, leaving your eyes fresh, even after a long day at the office in front of a screen. Digital Light Protection also provides scratch resistance and anti-glare properties. Speak to one of our expert opticians for more information.

DO I NEED AN ANTI-REFLECTION COATING ON MY LENSES?

An anti-reflective (AR), or anti-glare, coating eliminates glare on the front and back of your lenses for clear lenses. For sunglasses, we apply AR to the back side of the lens to eliminate reflections of light. AR is essential on any pair of Rx and non-RX glasses as it allows more light to pass to your eye for better optical quality. It is also proven to reduce eye strain and has easy-to-clean properties.
